What is Gold-Filled?
Gold-filled is a composition of a solid layer of gold bonded under heat and pressure to a base metal, usually brass. For ease of understanding, just imagine a layer of gold rolled into a tube and brass is poured in to fill up it's core. The layer of gold is 100 times thicker then gold-plated! Gold-filled items must have gold content of at least 1/20 in weight of the total item and is stamped GF.You can find 10K, 12K or 14K gold-filled items, but by far 14K seems to be most commonly used. Jewellery made from gold-filled materials do not tarnish or flake and are known to last...some say 5years, 30 years, 100 years or even a lifetime! Most importantly, you still have to care for your jewellery...as long as as the layer of gold stays...it will look good!
